About Brent Hinds

William Brent Hinds (January 16, 1974 – August 20, 2025) was an American musician renowned as the lead guitarist and one of the vocalists for the heavy metal band Mastodon. Born in Helena, Alabama, and raised near Birmingham, Hinds developed a diverse musical foundation that included country, bluesgrass, and classical guitar before pursuing a career in metal. He attended the Alabama School of Fine Arts and later moved to Atlanta, where he co-founded Mastodon with Bill Kelliher, Troy Sanders, and Brann Dailor. The band gained critical acclaim for pushing the boundaries of metal with innovative guitar work and complex compositions, with Hinds known for incorporating country influences into his playing style. Hinds also contributed as lead guitarist and singer for the surfabilly band Fiend Without a Face and was involved in side projects such as the supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra and the psychedelic rock group Legend of the Seagullmen. He composed the score for the 2010 film *Jonah Hex*, showcasing his versatility beyond metal performance. In March 2025, Mastodon announced Hinds’ departure by mutual decision, but he later publicly stated that he had been "kicked out" amid personal disagreements. Brent Hinds died in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta on August 20, 2025, at the age of 51. His passing marked the loss of a highly influential guitarist and a defining figure in 21st-century metal music, remembered for his creative risk-taking, distinctive guitar tone, and dynamic stage presence.
